Albania spent forty years as the most isolated country in Europe, and the 173,000 concrete bunkers built during it are still in the fields. Since opening it has become the Balkans' fastest-changing destination: an Ionian coast with genuinely empty beaches, an alpine north with a working blood-feud memory and hospitality codes older than the state, and a capital painted in primary colours.
Getting around
Furgon minibuses run without fixed timetables and leave when full. There is almost no functioning railway. The Koman Lake ferry is the way north and is spectacular. Roads have improved enormously and are still not fast.
When to come
The Ionian coast works from May to October and is busy with Albanians and Kosovars in August. The northern Alps are walkable from mid-June to early October; the Valbona-Theth pass is snowbound outside that.
Worth knowing
- Cash is still king outside Tirana; the lek is not widely obtainable abroad.
- Hospitality (besa) is a genuine cultural obligation and refusing food can offend.
- Mountain paths in the north are marked but rescue is limited — go with a guide or a good map.

Bunk'Art, underground

The Valbona to Theth pass
Six to eight hours over 1,800 metres between two valleys, with guesthouses at both ends and mules for bags.
