Belarus is flat, forested and thinly populated, with the Belarusian half of Białowieża — the last primeval lowland forest on the continent — along its southwestern border. Minsk was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt as a planned socialist city, which makes it one of the most coherent examples of that architecture anywhere.
Getting around
Rail and long-distance buses historically linked all regional centres. Current practicalities are governed by border and visa conditions that change often.
