The Belfry
366 steps to a carillon of 47 bells. The climb is single-file and timed, and the view is the only way to understand how small the medieval city actually is.
Groeningemuseum
Six centuries of Flemish painting in a building you can cross in twenty minutes, including Van Eyck's Madonna with Canon van der Paele.
Saint Bavo's Cathedral
Holds the Ghent Altarpiece — the Van Eyck brothers, 1432, twelve panels, stolen thirteen times and still missing one. It is shown behind glass in a climate-controlled chapel.
Gravensteen
A moated twelfth-century castle in the middle of the city, complete with the counts' quarters and a distinctly unsentimental collection of judicial instruments.
Cathedral of Our Lady
The tallest gothic church in the Low Countries, holding four Rubens altarpieces in the positions he painted them for.
MAS
A stack of red sandstone boxes on the old docks. The spiral escalator to the roof is free and gives the best view of the port.
