Diocletian's Palace
Not a ruin: a Roman emperor's retirement palace that three thousand people still live inside. The cathedral is his mausoleum, repurposed by the people he persecuted.
Marjan Hill
A pine-covered headland walked by everyone in Split at some point on a Sunday, with swimming coves on the south side and the whole coast from the top.
The City Walls
Two kilometres of unbroken circuit, up to 25 m high, walked in one direction only. Go at opening or an hour before closing; the middle of the day is a queue with a view.
Rector's Palace
Where the elected head of the Ragusan republic lived for exactly one month at a time, forbidden to leave the building — a constitution designed around distrust of power.
