Tivoli Gardens
Opened 1843 and the second-oldest amusement park still running. Walt Disney visited twice and took notes; the wooden roller coaster still has a brakeman riding in it.

A brewer's collection: Mediterranean antiquity downstairs, French impressionism upstairs, and a winter garden with a palm house in the middle of both.
Rosenborg Castle
A Renaissance summer house in the middle of town, holding the crown jewels in a basement that feels far too casual for what is in it.
Viking Ship Museum
Five ships deliberately sunk in 1070 to block the fjord, raised in 1962 and reassembled from fragments. Reconstructions are sailed from the harbour outside.
Roskilde Cathedral
The burial place of forty Danish kings and queens across nine hundred years, so the building is also a walk through changing ideas about how to be remembered.

Swim in the harbour
Free, supervised in summer, and the result of thirty years of cleaning up a working port.
Smørrebrød in the correct order
Herring first, then fish, then meat, then cheese, with aquavit between — a lunch that takes three hours and is meant to.
Row a reconstructed longship
Built with period tools from the excavated hulls; you supply the arms and learn quickly why Vikings were fit.
