Practical things about France that are not obvious from outside it.
- Lunch is 12 to 2 and a rural kitchen closes at 13:45 regardless of your plans.
- Bonjour on entering a shop is not optional politeness; skipping it reads as rudeness.
- Many museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, and unbearable on it.
Sleep below the peaks
A good base changes what you can see. What this atlas can tell you about sleeping in Chamonix is where the ground puts you and when the beds go. It holds no hotels, and the booking happens somewhere else.
The valley floor, and the town rather than the hamlets
Everything here happens from the valley: the lifts, the rack railway and the Tour du Mont Blanc all start within walking distance of the town, and the ground rises so fast on both sides that there is nowhere else level to be. Sleeping in the town is not a preference, it is the only place the valley is flat enough to put a bed and still be at the bottom of the cable car.
Within 40 km of here the ground spreads 1,798 m and crests at 2,752 m, measured from the same elevation model the map above is drawn from.
Book early for the summer window
The four peak months are the four that fill. A bed booked in February for August is an ordinary transaction; the same bed asked for in July is somebody else's cancellation. The shoulder either side is the quiet answer to that, and the lifts are still running in most of it.
Peak in France is June, July, August, September; the shoulder is April, May, October.
