Kosovo declared independence in 2008 and is recognised by around half the world's states, not including Serbia — a fact that shapes travel logistics more than daily experience. It is the youngest population in Europe, with an energetic café culture in Pristina, four UNESCO-listed Serbian Orthodox monasteries, and a share of the Peaks of the Balkans trail through the Accursed Mountains.
Getting around
Buses link Pristina, Prizren and Peja frequently and cheaply. Note the entry rule: if you enter Kosovo from Albania, Montenegro or North Macedonia, Serbia may not accept that as a legal entry into its territory — plan the direction of travel carefully.
When to come
Late spring and early autumn are best. The Rugova mountains are walkable from June to early October. Winters are cold and Brezovica offers cheap, basic skiing.
Worth knowing
- Entering from Serbia and leaving to a third country is straightforward; the reverse can create problems. Check current rules before routing.
- Uses the euro unilaterally.
- Orthodox monasteries are protected sites, sometimes with a police presence; visits are welcome and photography rules are strict.
