Alpine & Central Europe

Liechtenstein

Twenty-five kilometres long, ruled from a castle on the hill, and walkable end to end in a day.

2 destinations across 1 region · capital Vaduz

Liechtenstein has 40,000 people, no airport, no army, and more registered companies than citizens. It uses the Swiss franc, shares Switzerland's customs and is in the EEA but not the EU. For a visitor it is a mountain principality with an excellent modern art museum, a princely wine cellar, and a hiking trail that crosses the whole country.

Getting around

Buses run to every village and connect to Swiss trains at Sargans and Buchs. There is no railway station of consequence and no airport at all.

When to come

Summer for the high trail and the alpine huts; the mountain section is snow-free from late June. The National Day on 15 August includes the entire country being invited to the castle garden.

Worth knowing

  • Passport stamps are available as a souvenir at the tourist office; the border itself is unmanned.
  • Swiss francs everywhere; euros usually accepted at a poor rate.
  • The Liechtenstein Trail runs 75 km through all eleven municipalities.

At the table

  • Käsknöpfle, cheese dumplings with apple sauce, which is the national dish
  • Wine from the princely estate below the castle
  • Ribel, a maize porridge shared with the neighbouring Rhine valley

What we hold about Liechtenstein, where each figure came from, and when it was last checked. The score says what this country is for, not how good it is — it is useful once you are already interested and is not a reason to be.

How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
