Moldova is small, agricultural and almost entirely overlooked, which is precisely the argument for going. It has been making wine for five thousand years and stores it in limestone mines: Mileștii Mici holds two million bottles in 200 kilometres of tunnel. A cave monastery is cut into a cliff over the Răut, and rural guesthouse tourism is genuinely community-run.

Getting around

Minibuses (rutiere) reach every village from Chișinău. A driver or a car makes the cellars and monasteries practical. Note that Transnistria operates as a separate de facto administration with its own checks.

When to come

The harvest in late September and early October is the reason to time a visit — National Wine Day is the first weekend of October. Summers are hot and dry; winters are cold and quiet.

Worth knowing

  • Transnistria is a de facto separate administration; entry involves its own controls and your government's advice may differ for it.
  • Village guesthouse networks are well organised and startlingly cheap.
  • Cellar visits are usually by car through the tunnels, which is exactly as strange as it sounds.

At the table

  • Plăcinte, filled pastries, at every roadside
  • Mămăligă with sheep cheese and sour cream
  • Fetească neagră and rară neagră — indigenous grapes grown almost nowhere else

What we hold about Moldova, where each figure came from, and when it was last checked. The score says what this country is for, not how good it is — it is useful once you are already interested and is not a reason to be.

How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
