Montenegro
A drowned river canyon that looks like a fjord, with black mountains straight up behind it.

Montenegro is smaller than Wales and rises from sea level to 2,500 metres within twenty kilometres. The Bay of Kotor is a ria — a flooded river valley — walled by cliffs, with Venetian towns around its edge. Behind it, Durmitor's plateau and the Tara canyon are properly wild. It uses the euro without being in the EU or the eurozone formally.
Getting around
Buses along the coast and inland to Žabljak. The Belgrade–Bar railway crosses the Mala Rijeka viaduct, one of the highest rail bridges in Europe. A car makes the mountains practical and the coast in August difficult.
When to come
The coast is very busy in July and August and the single coast road becomes a queue. June and September are the answer. The mountains hold snow into June and are best from July to early October.
Worth knowing
- Uses the euro unilaterally; not in the EU.
- The coast road is single carriageway and slow in summer; the Sozina tunnel saves an hour.
- Mountain weather in Durmitor turns fast and rescue is limited.
At the table
- Njeguški pršut, air-dried ham from a mountain village above Kotor
- Kajmak, a clotted dairy spread served with everything
- Fish from the bay, grilled whole and priced by weight

What we hold about Montenegro, where each figure came from, and when it was last checked. The score says what this country is for, not how good it is — it is useful once you are already interested and is not a reason to be.

Europe Experience Score
How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
