North Macedonia

One of the oldest lakes on earth, a bazaar that never stopped trading, and a capital that rebuilt itself in marble.

North Macedonia is landlocked, mountainous, and centred on Lake Ohrid — between three and five million years old, with sixty endemic species and a town of churches on its shore. Skopje was flattened by an earthquake in 1963, rebuilt in concrete, and then rebuilt again in the 2010s in a neoclassical style that its own citizens argue about constantly.

Getting around

Buses connect Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola; the roads through the mountains are slow. Trains exist and are slower still. A car opens up the monasteries and Mavrovo.

When to come

Ohrid is warm and swimmable from June to September and the town is busy in August. Spring and early autumn are best for the mountains and the monasteries. Winter is cold and there is decent cheap skiing at Mavrovo.

Worth knowing

  • The name changed in 2019 after a long dispute with Greece; both the old and new forms are still heard.
  • Wild Ohrid trout is protected and should not be ordered.
  • Cash is common outside the cities.

At the table

  • Tavče gravče: baked beans in a clay dish, the national dish
  • Ajvar, made in vast quantities every September
  • Ohrid trout — check it is farmed, as the endemic wild one is protected

How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
