Serbia sits on the Danube where central Europe stops being central Europe. Belgrade has been destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times and behaves accordingly — unsentimental, loud and very good company. The north, Vojvodina, is flat, Hungarian-influenced and full of paprika; the south and west hold medieval monasteries with frescoes among the finest in Orthodox Europe.
Getting around
Buses cover the country densely; the Belgrade–Novi Sad fast railway opened recently. The Šargan Eight narrow-gauge line in the west is a ride for its own sake.
When to come
Late spring and early autumn are best; Belgrade in July is hot and the river barges are the only sensible place to be. Winter is cold and the trumpet festival at Guča in August is a phenomenon in its own right.
Worth knowing
- Not in the EU; the dinar is the currency and cash is more useful outside cities.
- Positions on Kosovo are politically charged here — visitors are best served by listening rather than opining.
- Smoking indoors is more common than elsewhere in Europe.

A 12th-century monastery of white marble in a wooded valley, with frescoes from 1209 and monks still living there.
