Slovakia was half of a country until 1993 and is still routinely confused with the other half. It has the High Tatras — a genuine alpine range compressed into 26 kilometres — over a hundred and eighty castles, wooden churches built without a single nail, and some of the best-value mountain travel in Europe. Bratislava is an hour from Vienna and nothing like it.
Getting around
Trains link Bratislava, Žilina, Poprad and Košice along the spine of the country. Poprad is the gateway to the Tatras, with an electric railway up to the resorts. Buses reach the wooden church villages.
When to come
The High Tatra ridge routes need July to September; some are closed by law from November to mid-June to protect wildlife. Winter is good, cheap skiing. Bratislava is pleasant from April.

- Mountain rescue in the Tatras is charged to the rescued; insurance is essential.
- Wooden churches in the northeast are UNESCO-listed and often need a key from a neighbour.
- Euro since 2009, unlike its neighbours.
