Check government travel advice before planning anything here
Ukraine is at war. Governments across Europe advise against all travel to the country, and this page exists as a record of a place rather than as an invitation to visit it. Nothing here should be read as a suggestion that leisure travel is currently appropriate.
EuropeDoor keeps a page for every country in Europe, including the ones nobody should be travelling to right now. A page here is a record, not a recommendation, and countries at this level are excluded from the Journey Planner.
Ukraine holds Europe's richest farmland, a Black Sea coast, the Carpathian foothills, and in Kyiv one of the oldest continuously important cities in the Slavic world — the monastery caves there date from 1051. Lviv's centre is Habsburg and intact. This page records what the country is; when travel is possible again, it will be updated by people who have been.
Getting around
Historically an extensive railway network with overnight sleepers between all major cities. Current conditions are governed by wartime restrictions, curfews and air-raid procedures.
When to come
Historically, late spring and early autumn. This is context, not a recommendation — see the advisory above.
Worth knowing
- Check your own government's current travel advice; at the time of writing it advises against all travel.
- This country is excluded from the Journey Planner for that reason.
- Support for Ukrainian cultural institutions is possible from outside without travelling.
At the table
- Borscht, which is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list as Ukrainian
- Varenyky, filled dumplings, sweet or savoury
- Salo, cured pork fat, taken far more seriously than outsiders expect
Travel regions
2 editorial regions, each opening onto its cities.

The record
What we hold about Ukraine, where each figure came from, and when it was last checked. The score says what this country is for, not how good it is — it is useful once you are already interested and is not a reason to be.

Europe Experience Score
How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
