Straight lines between stops, in order, ending at the hollow dot — the order is real, the lines are not routes. Coastline from Natural Earth, public domain. The whole map, with every journey →

A loop rather than a line: down the Atlantic, across the Moorish south, up the Mediterranean and back through the middle. High-speed rail makes the long legs painless and the slow legs are where the trip actually is.

The route, in order

Every hop is a straight-line distance between two coordinates. This atlas holds no road and no rail geometry, so that number is a floor on the leg and never the leg — Chamonix to Zermatt is 69 km here and about 170 on the ground, round a mountain range. It is here for the scale of the thing, not for planning a day.

  1. 1 Days 1–3 3 nights

    Porto Portugal

Begin on the Atlantic, with port lodges across the river.

  2. 2 Days 4–6 3 nights

↳ 274 km from Porto in a straight line

    Lisbon Portugal

Down the coast: tiles, fado and the Gulbenkian.

  3. 3 Days 7–8 2 nights

↳ 108 km from Lisbon in a straight line

    Évora Portugal

Inland into the Alentejo, and a Roman temple in a walled town.

  4. 4 Days 9–11 3 nights

↳ 213 km from Évora in a straight line

    Seville Spain

    Across the border into Andalusia.

  5. 5 Days 12–14 3 nights

↳ 213 km from Seville in a straight line

    Granada Spain

East, to the Alhambra and free tapas.

  6. 6 Days 15–16 2 nights

↳ 379 km from Granada in a straight line

    Valencia Spain

North up the Mediterranean for paella where the rice grows.

  7. 7 Days 17–19 3 nights

↳ 304 km from Valencia in a straight line

    Barcelona Spain

The last coastal stop, and the densest three days of the route.

  8. 8 Days 20–22 3 nights

↳ 505 km from Barcelona in a straight line

    Madrid Spain

Inland to finish: the Prado, vermouth at noon, and a train home.

Experiences along the way

Port, tasted in the right order

White, then tawny by age, then vintage — the tawnies are where the interest is and where the guides usually rush.

Porto · Cellar & vineyard

Fado in a small house

Lights down, conversation stops, and two guitars. The venues that ask for silence are the ones worth finding.

Lisbon · Music & performance

Azulejos, street by street

Tiled facades were cheap weatherproofing before they were beautiful; the Tile Museum explains it and then the streets deliver it.

Lisbon · Walk or hike

Cork oaks and Alentejo reds

The trees are stripped every nine years and the date is painted on the trunk; the wine estates between them charge a fraction of the Douro.

Évora · Cellar & vineyard

Flamenco in a peña

Members' clubs that admit visitors quietly; no castanets, no stage, and the singing is the part that matters.

Seville · Music & performance

The Nasrid palaces, on a timed ticket

Half-hour entry slots, sold out weeks ahead. Take the earliest of the day — the courtyards were designed for low light and few people.

Granada · Sacred site

Tapas, the Granada way

Every drink comes with a plate you did not order and cannot choose; four bars is a dinner.

Granada · Food & table

Paella where the rice grows

The Albufera lagoon south of the city grows the rice and cooks it over orange wood; lunchtime only, and never in the evening.

Valencia · Food & table

The grid, read as a plan

Cerdà's 1859 blocks were designed with gardens inside; a few have been reopened, and finding them changes how the city reads.

Barcelona · Walk or hike

La hora del vermut

Sunday, around one, house vermouth on tap with an olive and a siphon of soda — the most Madrid ninety minutes there is.

Madrid · Food & table

What you will be eating

  • Portugal — Bacalhau, salt cod, in a claimed 365 preparations
  • Spain — Tapas, which is a way of eating rather than a dish — and free with a drink in Granada and León

What to pack

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sun protection and a hat from May
  • A siesta-shaped attitude to the afternoon

What this estimate covers

About €2,670 per person: 22 nights at the moderate daily band for each country on the route, plus a distance-based transport figure between stops, plus 12%. It excludes getting to the start and home from the end, and it is planning arithmetic from published bands rather than a quote. How these numbers are made →
