Straight lines between stops, in order, ending at the hollow dot — the order is real, the lines are not routes. Coastline from Natural Earth, public domain. The whole map, with every journey →

Also from the specification: the northern shore of the Mediterranean, followed east. It changes language five times and cuisine about fifteen, and the through-line is a sea that everyone on it has been trading across for three thousand years. Ferries and trains for most of it; one flight at the end unless you have a spare week.

The route, in order

Every hop is a straight-line distance between two coordinates. This atlas holds no road and no rail geometry, so that number is a floor on the leg and never the leg — Chamonix to Zermatt is 69 km here and about 170 on the ground, round a mountain range. It is here for the scale of the thing, not for planning a day.

  1. 1 Days 1–3 3 nights

    Barcelona Spain

Start where the Mediterranean meets a grid designed in 1859.

  2. 2 Days 4–5 2 nights

↳ 490 km from Barcelona in a straight line

    Nice France

Over the border along the coast, into the light the painters came for.

  3. 3 Days 6–7 2 nights

↳ 199 km from Nice in a straight line

Vernazza & the Cinque Terre Italy

Into Liguria and the five villages on the cliff coast.

  4. 4 Days 8–10 3 nights

↳ 338 km from Vernazza & the Cinque Terre in a straight line

    Rome Italy

Inland briefly, because it would be absurd not to.

  5. 5 Days 11–12 2 nights

↳ 188 km from Rome in a straight line

    Naples Italy

South for the archaeological museum and the pizza that justifies the detour.

  6. 6 Days 13–15 3 nights

↳ 429 km from Naples in a straight line

    Syracuse & Ortigia Italy

Across to Sicily: the most powerful Greek city in the world, once.

  7. 7 Days 16–17 2 nights

↳ 493 km from Syracuse & Ortigia in a straight line

    Corfu Greece

East across the Ionian, into Venetian Greece.

  8. 8 Days 18–20 3 nights

↳ 377 km from Corfu in a straight line

    Athens Greece

The end of the arc, and the beginning of most of what is on it.

Experiences along the way

What you will be eating

  • Spain — Tapas, which is a way of eating rather than a dish — and free with a drink in Granada and León
  • France — Bread bought twice a day, because it is worth nothing by evening
  • Italy — Pasta by region — trofie in Liguria, orecchiette in Puglia, carbonara only in Rome
  • Greece — Whatever is in the pot that day — ask to see the kitchen, which is normal

What to pack

  • Water shoes
  • Sun protection from May
  • A dry bag
  • Modest dress for churches

What this estimate covers

About €2,880 per person: 20 nights at the moderate daily band for each country on the route, plus a distance-based transport figure between stops, plus 12%. It excludes getting to the start and home from the end, and it is planning arithmetic from published bands rather than a quote. How these numbers are made →
