Journey
The Baltic Crossing
Four capitals and a sea
14 days · 5 stops · 4 countries · 646 km in a straight line
A short, dense route round the eastern Baltic: three capitals that were occupied within living memory and one that was not, joined by ferries that locals use as buses. It is the cheapest good rail-and-boat trip in northern Europe and the least travelled by visitors from outside it.
The route, in order
Every hop is a straight-line distance between two coordinates. This atlas holds no road and no rail geometry, so that number is a floor on the leg and never the leg — Chamonix to Zermatt is 69 km here and about 170 on the ground, round a mountain range. It is here for the scale of the thing, not for planning a day.

Experiences along the way
A public sauna on the sea
Hot, then the Baltic, then hot again. The rule is that nobody performs and nobody talks much.
The Design District on foot
Twenty-five streets, two hundred shops and studios, and the through-line from Aalto to whoever graduated last year.
Walk the wall, tower to tower
Two kilometres of it still stand; the sections you can climb give the roofline the postcards use.
Bog shoes in Lahemaa
Snowshoe-like frames let you cross raised bog off the boardwalk — an hour from the capital and utterly silent.
The facades of Alberta iela
Ninety minutes and a raised chin: everything worth seeing here is above the first floor.
Lunch in the Zeppelin hangars
Smoked fish, black bread, curd and pickles bought from four different counters and eaten standing up.
The courtyards nobody signposts
The old town's real geography is behind the street doors; push the unlocked ones and keep going.
Read the Užupis constitution
Forty-one articles on mirrored plaques, including a dog's right to be a dog and everyone's right to be happy — and not to be.
What you will be eating
- Finland — Rye bread, dense and sour, eaten with everything
- Estonia — Black bread, dense and slightly sweet, served with everything
- Latvia — Rye bread, and rye bread ice cream, which works
- Lithuania — Cepelinai: potato dumplings the size and shape of a zeppelin
What to pack
- A windproof layer
- Comfortable shoes for cobbles
- A card — the region is nearly cashless
What this estimate covers
About €1,550 per person: 13 nights at the moderate daily band for each country on the route, plus a distance-based transport figure between stops, plus 12%. It excludes getting to the start and home from the end, and it is planning arithmetic from published bands rather than a quote. How these numbers are made →
