Journey
The White South
Andalusia and the Maghreb's long shadow
15 days · 6 stops · 1 country · 671 km in a straight line
Eight centuries of Islamic rule left more than the Alhambra, and this route is the rest of it: the horseshoe arch in the village church, the irrigation channel still running, the word for the vegetable. Short legs, hot afternoons, and everything happening after six.
The route, in order
Every hop is a straight-line distance between two coordinates. This atlas holds no road and no rail geometry, so that number is a floor on the leg and never the leg — Chamonix to Zermatt is 69 km here and about 170 on the ground, round a mountain range. It is here for the scale of the thing, not for planning a day.

Experiences along the way
Flamenco in a peña
Members' clubs that admit visitors quietly; no castanets, no stage, and the singing is the part that matters.
The Nasrid palaces, on a timed ticket
Half-hour entry slots, sold out weeks ahead. Take the earliest of the day — the courtyards were designed for low light and few people.
Tapas, the Granada way
Every drink comes with a plate you did not order and cannot choose; four bars is a dinner.
What you will be eating
- Spain — Tapas, which is a way of eating rather than a dish — and free with a drink in Granada and León
What to pack
- A hat
- A siesta
- Shoes for cobbled hills
- Modest dress for the mosque-cathedral
What this estimate covers
About €1,750 per person: 14 nights at the moderate daily band for each country on the route, plus a distance-based transport figure between stops, plus 12%. It excludes getting to the start and home from the end, and it is planning arithmetic from published bands rather than a quote. How these numbers are made →
