Armenia is high, dry and volcanic, with an alphabet invented in 405 and a monastic architecture of grey tufa that sits in landscapes chosen for isolation. Mount Ararat dominates the skyline from Yerevan and stands across the closed Turkish border. The country is landlocked with two of its four borders shut, which shapes everything about how you get in and out.
Getting around
Marshrutkas from Yerevan reach the regions. A hired car and driver is affordable and makes the monasteries practical. Borders with Türkiye and Azerbaijan are closed; entry is via Georgia or by air.
When to come
Spring and autumn; Yerevan is very hot in July and August and the high monasteries are snowbound in winter. Lake Sevan is swimmable, briefly, in August.

- The borders with Türkiye and Azerbaijan are closed; overland routes go through Georgia or Iran.
- The genocide of 1915 is central to national memory and the memorial is treated with real solemnity.
- Monasteries are working churches; women are not required to cover but modest dress is expected.
