Schönbrunn Palace
1,441 rooms, a park that is free to walk, and a zoo founded in 1752 that is the oldest still operating anywhere.
Kunsthistorisches Museum
The Habsburg collection, which means the largest group of Bruegels in existence and a room of Vermeer, Velázquez and Caravaggio that would be a national museum anywhere else.
Stephansdom
The tiled roof is the thing: 230,000 glazed tiles in a chevron pattern, laid as a double eagle on one side and the city arms on the other.
Naschmarkt
A kilometre and a half of stalls that began as a milk market in the 1770s. Cheaper and less performed at the far end from the underground station.

Practical things about Austria that are not obvious from outside it.
- In a coffee house you are buying the table, not the coffee; nobody will rush you.
- Mountain huts (Hütten) need booking and cash, and lights go out early.
- Sunday closing is near-total outside stations and tourist areas.
Stay in the city
A good base changes what you can see. What this atlas can tell you about sleeping in Vienna is where to base yourself and when the beds go. It holds no hotels, and the booking happens somewhere else.
Anywhere central, and the choice is character rather than geography
Chamonix has one answer to this because its valley has one flat place in it. Vienna has none, and saying so is more useful than inventing one: the city is dense in every direction out of the old centre, the things you would come for are not gathered at one edge of it, and no part of it is cut off from the rest by anything. So the question here is what you want to wake up in — the imperial centre, or a district that is somebody's actual neighbourhood — and this atlas has no view on that worth pretending to.
This one fills in winter too
Most of Europe empties in February and Vienna does not: the ball season is in it, and the city's own peak runs through the winter as well as the summer. That makes the usual advice backwards here. There is no single quiet month to aim at, so book around what is on rather than around the weather.
