Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian, on gas reserves that have been burning at the surface for millennia — the Zoroastrian fire temples were built around them. Baku pairs a walled old city with a skyline of flame-shaped towers. Beyond the capital the Greater Caucasus rises to 4,000 metres with mountain villages that kept their own languages, and mud volcanoes cover the semi-desert south.

Getting around

A modern railway links Baku to Ganja and Sheki. Buses and shared taxis cover the rest. Mountain villages like Xinaliq need a 4x4. The Armenian border is closed.

When to come

Spring and autumn; Baku is hot and windy in summer and the mountains are best from June to September. Novruz in March is the biggest holiday of the year.

Worth knowing

  • The border with Armenia is closed; an Armenian stamp can complicate entry.
  • Baku's old city and the Gobustan petroglyphs are both UNESCO-listed.
  • Tea houses are a social institution and usually male-dominated outside the capital.

At the table

  • Plov, in dozens of versions, cooked in a pastry crust for feasts
  • Dolma and kebab, argued over with every neighbour
  • Tea from a pear-shaped armudu glass, with jam rather than sugar

What we hold about Azerbaijan, where each figure came from, and when it was last checked. The score says what this country is for, not how good it is — it is useful once you are already interested and is not a reason to be.

How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
