Bulgaria has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic and holds the oldest processed gold in the world, from a grave at Varna. It is mountainous — two ranges cross it — with a Black Sea coast, a valley that supplies most of the world's rose oil, and a monastery tradition that kept the language alive under five centuries of Ottoman rule. It is one of the best-value countries in the EU.
Getting around
Buses beat the slow railways for most journeys, though the narrow-gauge Rhodope line is worth taking for itself. Sofia has a metro. A car reaches the monasteries and the mountain villages.
When to come
The Rila and Pirin mountains are walkable July to September. The rose harvest is a few weeks in late May and early June. Winter skiing at Bansko is genuinely cheap. The Black Sea coast is full in August.
Worth knowing
- Shaking the head means yes and nodding can mean no — it catches everyone out.
- In the EU but the lev is still the currency, pegged to the euro.
- Mountain huts in Rila and Pirin are basic, cheap and often full at weekends.

A stone-built mountain town under Pirin, with cheap skiing in winter and hut-to-hut walking in summer.

A rocky peninsula joined by a causeway, with more medieval churches per square metre than anywhere on the Black Sea.
