The Mediterranean
Cyprus
The last divided capital in Europe, on an island of Byzantine churches and mountain wine.

- Cyprus
Cyprus is the third-largest Mediterranean island and has been divided since 1974, with a UN buffer zone running through the middle of Nicosia. The Republic controls the south; the north is administered separately and recognised only by Türkiye. Beyond the politics, it holds painted Byzantine churches in the Troodos mountains, Roman mosaics at Paphos, and one of the oldest wine traditions in the world.
Getting around
No railway at all; buses connect the cities and a car is close to essential for the mountains. Crossing to the north on foot at Ledra Street in Nicosia is straightforward for most visitors with a passport, subject to current rules.
When to come
Spring is the island's best season — green, flowering and warm enough to swim by May. July and August are extremely hot inland. The Troodos mountains hold snow and a small ski area in February.
Worth knowing
- Driving is on the left.
- Crossing points between south and north exist and rules change — check current guidance before planning around one.
- The Troodos churches are small, locked and often opened by a neighbour with a key; a donation is expected.
At the table
- Meze, twenty or more small plates, ordered for the table and never finished
- Halloumi, grilled, which is a protected local product and tastes different here
- Commandaria: a sweet wine made the same way since antiquity

Popular destinations
The destinations we have written most about, which is not the same as the ones most people go to — and is the only ranking we can honestly compute.
Nicosia
A Venetian star-shaped fortress city with a UN buffer zone through the middle and a crossing on the main shopping street.
Omodos & the wine villages
Cobbled mountain villages growing indigenous grapes nobody else has, around a 12th-century monastery.
Paphos
A harbour town with Roman villa floors that are among the finest mosaics anywhere, and royal tombs cut into the rock.
Experiences here
A sample of what is listed across Cyprus.
The Green Line, walked
Sandbags, oil drums and 1974 shopfronts, visible from the streets that dead-end into them. Sobering and entirely ordinary to residents.
The barn-roofed painted churches
Small stone chapels under enormous pitched roofs, frescoed inside floor to ceiling; several need a key fetched from a village house.
The Journey Planner holds all 3 of these destinations and the real distances between them. It opens on 4 days, which is the shortest stay this atlas records for each of them added up — change the length, the month, the budget or the pace and build it again.

Europe Experience Score
How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
