Estonia is closer to Finland than to its Baltic neighbours in language and temperament, and closer to nobody at all in how thoroughly it moved government online. Half the country is forest, a fifth is bog, and the whole coast is shallow, islanded and quiet. It sang its way out of occupation in 1988, and the choral festival that did it still fills a stadium every five years.
Getting around
Tallinn is walkable and its public transport is free to residents. Buses reach everywhere cheaply; ferries serve the western islands. Helsinki is two hours away across the gulf.
When to come
Summer is short, bright and social; midsummer empties the cities into the countryside. Winter is dark and properly cold, which is when the bog walks are best because the ground is finally solid.

- Almost every public service is digital, including e-residency for non-citizens.
- Bogs are a national landscape: boardwalks make them accessible without wrecking them.
- The Russian border area requires care and current advice.
