Finland is 188,000 lakes and more forest per person than anywhere in Europe, arranged around a habit of not talking unnecessarily. The sauna is not a spa treatment here; it is where the country conducts its private life, and there are more saunas than cars. Lapland in winter is the reason most people come, and the lake district in July is the reason some come back.
Getting around
Trains north to Rovaniemi run overnight with car carriages. Helsinki's trams and the Suomenlinna ferry are on the same ticket. Beyond the rail line, Lapland is a car or a coach.
When to come
July is lake weather and the whole country is at a summer cottage. February and March give reliable snow with returning daylight — better than December, which is dark and expensive. Autumn ruska, the turning of the Lapland birch, is a fortnight in mid-September.
Worth knowing
- Sauna etiquette: naked, quiet, and you throw water on the stones yourself.
- Everyman's right allows walking, berry-picking and mushrooming on almost all land.
- Winter driving needs winter tyres by law, and reindeer have right of way in practice.
