Germany
Berlin & the East
The capital, Saxony's baroque cities, and the landscape of a country that was two countries.
Destinations
Berlin
Poor, sexy, enormous and unfinished — five museums on one island and a wall memorial that refuses to be comfortable.
Dresden
A baroque royal capital burned in 1945 and rebuilt stone by numbered stone, on a river bend.
Leipzig
Bach's church, a peaceful revolution that started in it, and a cotton mill full of painters.
Places to see
Everything recorded across Berlin & the East, in one list.
Museumsinsel
Five museums on one island in the Spree, holding the Pergamon altar, the bust of Nefertiti and enough classical sculpture to make a day feel short.
East Side Gallery
The longest surviving stretch of the Wall, 1.3 km of it, painted by artists from twenty-one countries in 1990 and repainted since as the originals weathered.
Brandenburg Gate
Prussian triumphal arch, then a gate nobody could pass through for twenty-eight years, and now the place every photograph of the city is taken from.
Tempelhofer Feld
A closed airport turned into a park, and the runways were left. Berliners cycle, skate and barbecue on a 300-hectare field where planes landed until 2008.
Frauenkirche
Rebuilt from its own rubble between 1994 and 2005, with the blackened original stones set back where they were found. The dark blocks in the pale facade are the point.
The Zwinger
A baroque pleasure palace built around a courtyard, now holding the Old Masters gallery and Raphael's Sistine Madonna — the one with the two bored cherubs at the bottom.

Accommodation & restaurants
EuropeDoor lists neither, yet. Both are business listings rather than editorial entries: they need an operator who claims them, a verification tier and a way to keep prices current, and all three are blocked on the same thing as everything else commercial here. How listings will work · what is built and what is blocked.
Publishing a scraped hotel list would be quick and would be the first unverified thing on this site. That is the trade being refused.
The record
What this atlas holds about Berlin & the East. The counts are derived from the region's own destinations and move when it does; the seasons and the daily cost belong to Germany and are repeated here rather than looked up.

Food, events and practicalities are on the country page
They belong to Germany rather than to Berlin & the East, and repeating them on every region page is how two copies of a fact start disagreeing. Germany →
