Museumsinsel
Five museums on one island in the Spree, holding the Pergamon altar, the bust of Nefertiti and enough classical sculpture to make a day feel short.
East Side Gallery
The longest surviving stretch of the Wall, 1.3 km of it, painted by artists from twenty-one countries in 1990 and repainted since as the originals weathered.
Brandenburg Gate
Prussian triumphal arch, then a gate nobody could pass through for twenty-eight years, and now the place every photograph of the city is taken from.
Tempelhofer Feld
A closed airport turned into a park, and the runways were left. Berliners cycle, skate and barbecue on a 300-hectare field where planes landed until 2008.

- Cash is still king in a surprising number of bakeries, bars and taxis.
- Sunday closing is near-total; buy food on Saturday.
- Jaywalking against a red man is genuinely disapproved of, especially with children present.
