A quarter of the Netherlands lies below sea level and nearly all of it was arranged by people — drained, diked, pumped and planned. That habit of design runs through the painting, the cities and the bicycle infrastructure, which is the best on earth and not close. Amsterdam absorbs most visitors; Utrecht, Rotterdam and the northern islands absorb almost none.
Getting around
Trains are frequent and the whole country is inside two hours. Rent a bicycle in every city; the lanes are separated, signposted and used by everyone from toddlers to pensioners in suits. The OV-chipkaart or a contactless card covers everything.
When to come
The bulb fields flower from late March to mid-May and that is a genuine spectacle with genuine crowds. Summer is long-evening terrace weather. Winter is grey and flat, and the museums are empty, which is a fair trade.
Worth knowing
- Do not walk in the bicycle lane. This is the single most reliable way to annoy a Dutch person.
- Amsterdam's centre is heavily regulated now — tours, rentals and behaviour all more restricted than the reputation suggests.
- Almost everyone speaks excellent English and will switch before you finish your first Dutch sentence.
