Poland is large, flat in the middle, mountainous in the south and forested in the east, where Europe's last primeval woodland still stands. Its cities carry the twentieth century openly: Warsaw was destroyed and reconstructed, Kraków survived intact, Gdańsk was rebuilt as a Hanseatic port. It is one of the best-value countries in Europe and the food has become genuinely interesting in the last decade.
Getting around
Intercity trains between the main cities are fast and cheap; regional services are slow but reach everywhere. FlixBus and domestic operators fill the gaps. Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk are all walkable.
When to come
Summer for the lakes, the coast and the Tatras. September is warm and empty. Winter is properly cold and Kraków's Christmas market is one of the oldest in Europe.
Worth knowing
- Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial and a cemetery; visits are free, timed, and behaviour there matters.
- Milk bars (bar mleczny) are subsidised canteens serving a full meal for a few euros.
- The złoty, not the euro, though cards work nearly everywhere.
