Romania is a Latin language surrounded by Slavic ones, with a German-founded Transylvania in the middle and an Orthodox monastic north. It has Europe's largest remaining virgin forest, some 6,000 brown bears, and hay meadows farmed by scythe in villages where that never stopped. Bucharest carries the marks of Ceaușescu's demolitions and the Belle Époque city he demolished.
Getting around
Trains are slow but reach the Transylvanian towns and the Danube. Buses and minibuses fill the gaps. A car is close to essential for the Saxon villages and the painted monasteries.
When to come
May and June for hay meadows and wildflowers, September for the light and the food. The Transfăgărășan road opens roughly July to October and is closed by snow the rest of the year. Winter is cold and the Carpathian ski areas are cheap.
Worth knowing
- Bears are genuinely present in the Carpathians; do not feed them from a car, which is both illegal and how people get hurt.
- The leu, not the euro.
- Village guesthouses (pensiuni) are the best accommodation in the country and cost very little.

A bear hide in the Carpathians
Licensed hides run by biologists at dusk; Romania holds most of Europe's brown bears and this is the ethical way to see one.
Haymaking with a scythe
The meadows are cut by hand because machines would destroy them; in June the villages will show you how and it is harder than it looks.

A 1547 exterior fresco whose blue has not faded in five hundred winters, and whose recipe is still not known.

The big tour boats stay in the main channels; a local with a small engine gets you into the reed corridors where the birds are.
