Istanbul & Thrace, Türkiye
Istanbul
Capital of two empires, on two continents, with a 1,500-year-old church-mosque at the centre of it.
Istanbul is at 41.010°N, 28.980°E.
Why go
- Hagia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern under the street outside
- The Süleymaniye mosque, quieter and better proportioned than the Blue Mosque
- A commuter ferry to Kadıköy at dusk, with tea, for the price of a bus ride
- Breakfast in Beşiktaş, which will take the whole morning
Give it 3–5 nights
Enough to see the list below without spending the trip on trains. The Journey Planner uses exactly this range when it builds an itinerary.

Things to do
Between continents on a commuter ferry
Twenty minutes, a glass of tea, gulls following the stern, and Europe and Asia both in view. The single best thing in the city and nearly free.
A two-hour Turkish breakfast
Fifteen small dishes, endless tea, and no expectation that you leave. Order for the table and clear the morning.

Travel tips
Practical things about Türkiye that are not obvious from outside it.
- Only East Thrace and part of Istanbul are geographically in Europe; the rest is Asia.
- Mosques welcome visitors outside prayer times; shoes off, shoulders and knees covered, heads covered for women.
- Bargaining is expected in bazaars and not in shops.
Accommodation & restaurants
EuropeDoor lists neither, yet. Both are business listings rather than editorial entries: they need an operator who claims them, a verification tier and a way to keep prices current, and all three are blocked on the same thing as everything else commercial here. How listings will work · what is built and what is blocked.
Publishing a scraped hotel list would be quick and would be the first unverified thing on this site. That is the trade being refused.

Europe Experience Score
How this is calculated — derived from our own tagging, not from measurement. It says what a place is for, not how good it is. The tick on each bar is the median across the whole Atlas, so a bar short of it is a dimension this place is not for.
