Hay meadows and the people who cut them

Romania, where this project is. The register records the country and no finer position — coastline and frontiers from Natural Earth, public domain.

Transylvania's hay meadows hold some of the richest plant diversity in Europe, and they hold it because they are cut by hand at the right time each year. Mechanised cutting destroys them within a decade.

What it needs

Scythe blades, peening tools and training weeks, plus a small per-hectare payment that makes hand cutting survivable for families who would otherwise stop.
