Wooden churches of Maramureș

Romania, where this project is. The register records the country and no finer position — coastline and frontiers from Natural Earth, public domain.

Shingle-roofed oak churches built without nails, some from the 1600s, in villages of a few hundred people. Shingles last about thirty years and the craft of splitting them is held by a handful of people.

What it needs

Apprenticeships in shingle splitting, and materials for two roofs a year.
